‘Weather-whiplash’ Hits Portland And The Northwest

November 2012 in Portland started with record breaking warmth.

For example–our lows for the first six days in a row were in the 50s. We’ve never had six consecutive November low temperatures at or above 50 degrees at PDX since records started being kept there in 1941.

Now, it’s suddenly cold. Portland’s had its first morning in the 30s since last April–and coolest highs since then, too.

Plus the snow is flying again on… Read more

Records Fall From November Heat, Big Cool Down Ahead

20121104-222832.jpg

I actually saw people wearing shorts on Sunday November 4, 2012.

And for once…it was a good call to wear them!

The warm and humid air streaming in from the southwest boosted highs in the metro area into the upper 60s even with just occasional sun breaks.

But where the sun really came out–it seemed like a ‘November heat-wave’ had come to town. Look at these highs!

Portland Has An Incredibly Wet October, Now A Drier November?

We know how October works, right?

We start warm in Portland. And we end up all wet.

But rarely do we get this wet–6.14″ of rain, 205% of average! All that and not even in the top 5 wettest Octobers. Oh well, maybe next time.

Hurricane Sandy, By The Numbers

20121030-004104.jpg
Flood water from Hurricane Sandy storm surge pours into a New Jersey Path (subway) station in Hoboken, NJ. It looks like something I saw just last week on the Universal Studios tour. But this is for real.

And today, Tuesday October 30, 2012, is when we see much more of the damage that’s been done.

In the meantime, I’ve started to compile some facts for the post on… Read more

Hurricane Sandy Will Make History

20121029-085520.jpg
Hurricane Sandy is going to do so much damage & devastation to the northeast that it’s going to be hard to believe.

These pictures are coming in on Twitter from Atlantic City, New Jersey–a full 12 hours before landfall is expected along the New Jersey Coast.

How Pacific Northwest Dodged Tsunami Trouble After 7.7 Earthquake

Tsunami energy map canada quake
This map shows how Oregon, Washington & Alaska missed getting hit by a significant tsunami after a 7.7 magnitude quake off the coast of British Columbia last night.

Tsunami experts track what they call the beam of energy after a major earthquake like this. That beam was aimed away (mostly) from the northwest.

That saved us this time.

And you can clearly see the ‘finger’ of energy aimed toward Hawaii. This is based… Read more
