After forecasting in the Willamette area for 15 years, I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve seen pictures like these where the hail is inches deep.
It started with lightning and thunder and then the hail just dumped from the sky.

It’s a rare site, but April 6, 2011 was the kind of day where things like this could happen.
Hail, downpours, thunder and lightning.

Here’s something I’ve noticed: every year when April hits Oregon and Washington most of us are shocked it’s still rainy and gray.
And we really do a double take when anyone mentions the chance for snowflakes.
Even more surprising is what the records say in my graphic here.

We grumbled so long (and loudly) about our record breaking cold and rain during March 2011 - that the winds finally brought in Portland’s first 60 degree day on March 31, the latest on record.
But in the Oregon and Washington Cascades, that warm up has helped make avalanche danger as high as it can get the last few days.
