Where The Wind Chill Is Nearly 90 Below Zero

January 5, 2018 by Bruce Sussman Leave a Comment

I was at KATU News Friday night, updating the forecast for the 11pm newscast. We always have new information to analyze before the late news starts. And that’s when I noticed this funny and crazy tweet from the National Weather Service Office in Seattle:

Can you believe what it says? Mt. Washington, New Hampshire with a temperature of 33 below zero and wind chill of 88 below! And as the National Weather Service points out, it makes it seem like the South Pole is having a heatwave since it was “only” -9 down there.

The reactions to this tweet were also entertaining:

Ashley’s comment was a good one: “I’m sorry, what? Didn’t even know that was actually possible.”

It absolutely is, especially when you consider that the coldest air temperature ever recorded on the earth was in Vostok, Antarctica: -128.5ºF (-89.2ºC). Again, that’s just the air temperature!

What is the temperature – weather right now on Mt. Washington, New Hampshire

Want to see the live weather right now on Mt. Washington? Here is the live link to Mt. Washington Observatory weather.

By the way, the top of Mt. Washington is about 6,200′ so it’s about the same elevation as Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood. And winds like these, along with bitter cold, are a theme of sorts after a ‘bomb cyclone’ moves through. And yes, a ‘bomb cyclone’ is real – here is the explanation.
