Weather On The Other Side Of The World Impacts The Pacific Northwest

January 29, 2011 by Bruce Sussman 1 Comment

What in the world could a picture of a stranded kangaroo have to do with the Northwestern U.S.? More than most of us realize.

More than I realized until visiting with another dad at a recent kids birthday party. He’s a lumber broker and he’s seeing first hand how the 50 years floods in Australia are being felt here in the Northwest.

  • China had been buying lots of lumber from New Zealand
  • Now New Zealand is selling that lumber to Australia to rebuild
  • China is now increasing the amount of lumber it orders from British Columbia, Washington and Oregon.

This example comes straight from our ‘small world department’. If you see things like this, let me know, will you?

I have known most of my life what a small planet this one is. I have paid attention to the labels that come on our products. And now with the global economy in fullest swing in quite a while it will only get smaller.
