BCS Championship Game Weather in Glendale Arizona: Ducks vs. Auburn

December 6, 2010 by Bruce Sussman Leave a Comment

It was just hours after the Ducks won the Civil War and we knew for sure it would be Oregon vs. Auburn in the BCS 2011 Championship Game. That’s when I heard it on Koin Local 6 News: hundreds of people had already booked the “game day package” where you pay $1,600 for a ticket to the game and a round trip flight on a charter aircraft. Down and back with no hotels involved.

Wow, $1,600 to see the Ducks play in the 2011 BCS Championship game.  If you’re going then I’m jealous. And I’ve done your weather homework for gameday (no charge) so you don’t have to Google it five times between now and then! Here is what the long term records say for Phoenix and Glendale, Arizona on January 10:

For starters, odds favor dry weather. 82% of the time, January 10 is dry in Glendale and Phoenix. But remember, it is winter in the desert, too. Let’s just hope it’s not like January 10, 1905 — 1.51″ of rain fell that day. Of course if that happens, it’s a definite advantage for the Ducks, wouldn’t you say?
Beyond that, there’s a good chance of needing to wear sunscreen if you’re from the Northwest. I looked up the chance of sunny or mostly sunny skies on January 10th and there’s a 75% chance of that happening for you.

Then there are the temperatures you can expect. The average low that time of year is in the mid-40s. But the average high is a very respectable 67 degrees. Of course it would be cooler at game time (5:30pm PST) on an average day, probably 62 or so. But you can always hope to break the record for January 10th. The record high in Glendale, Arizona on January 10 is 84 degrees, set back in 1990. What if it hits 85? That would just be classic. The week before the game, I’ll keep you up to date on Glendale’s actual forecast.  In the meantime, you can dream of bringing home a victory and maybe a tan, too!

So, what kind of weather do you think would be best for the Ducks to play in? Does it even make a difference to the players and how well they do? Let me know what you think!
