Is Summer Heat Over For The Pacific Northwest?

September 14, 2011 by Bruce Sussman Leave a Comment

I’ve been fighting against the idea that it could be over.

Each morning this week I’ve worn sandals, shorts and a short sleeved shirt to drop the kids at pre-school.

And each morning I wonder, “What was I thinking?”

I know what I was thinking. It was 90 last Sunday and suddenly we can’t even hit 70 around here!

Cool Weather Trend Hanging Tough, Hope For More Heat Is Real

In the graphic, you can see what the records say about how late Portland, Oregon can get hot. Portland has hit 90 in early October and 80 the third week of October. So there’s still quite a bit of time for sunny and hot weather. And like the last heat wave that suddenly appeared and then hung around for 10 days, a repeat is always possible and the records here prove it.

But as I looked at the latest model run (a series of digital forecast charts that show us what the atmosphere should do down the road) it looks like cooler than average weather is here to stay through about September 24th. Then, on September 25th, 2011, there’s a big warm up that will put us well into the 80s. I can’t wait!

Of course, there’s just one problem with getting too excited about this idea: a forecast for that far out is bound to change. That’s why you don’t see a 10 or 15 day forecast on the evening news. It’s really not worth anyone’s time speculating about things that far out.

But it’s fun to track. So let’s see what happens. And don’t give up on a return of summer weather. At least not until October 21st!
