Sussman’s Believe It Or Not: Portland’s Had A Nice July So Far

July 13, 2011 by Bruce Sussman 9 Comments

True, it’s an unusually cool, gray and drizzly day as I’m writing this post.

But outside of the last 48 hours, this has been a pretty nice July.

I’m calling it ‘Sussman’s believe it or not’ because when I was telling people at the office yesterday that it’s been a nice July so far only half of them believed me!

So I whipped up this graphic to spell out the facts.

But missing is something hot weather lovers like myself have really noticed: uh, hot weather! Typically, Portland sees it’s first 90 degree day of the year by mid-late June. Now here we are, mid-July, with no 90s in sight.

And if you look at the record books like I just did, you’ll see that all of the last five Julys had 2-4 days of 90 degree heat during the first two weeks. And then, there’s this year.

But I know not everyone is sad about this. Many of us prefer 70s and 80s anyway. If that’s you, this is your kind of July!

I am pretty picky. I don’t like the cold amd I don’t like it too hot. So around 70 is perfect for me. So I agree with you Bruce is has been a great July this year. And if you don’t like the rain then you shouldn’t be living in oregon.

Heidi–you make a good point. This is rain and cool country & we’d better get used to it!
      Thanks for your post…

Rain and cool in winter yes. Not in the middle of summer. 5 months in a row with 80% of daily temps below average is not normal. Neither is 100 degrees for weeks in the South…

Rain cloud cool rain cloud cool. Little teasers of actual summer weather after 10 months of rain cloud cool. It would be nice to recall what it’s like to bask in real warmth and sunshine before we get fall again and more rain cloud cool six weeks from now. Yes we humans broke the weather.

Oh my gosh–I laughed so hard at your comment.
It is so true–it would be nice to have a break from the 10 month rainy season. I’m with you!
I’m hoping this ship turns around for an extended stretch by the end of July. Thanks for your post.

You are sooo right Bruce. The weather has been wonderful – just my kind. I think I listen to the weather forecasts mainly to reinforce that it will be cool – and if I’m really lucky some rain with it. I am not a sun worshiper. I hate HOT weather – anything beyond 72 destroys my equilibrium. Being an Oregonian and due to circumstances having lived in Arizona much too long I was ready for some sane weather.

Katty–I am surprised how many people are loving this cool summer.
And ironically, I’ve heard from several people, just like you, that spent time in the desert and are glad to have escaped the heat!
Thanks again for taking time to comment. Have a great rest of the weekend!

You escape the heat by jumping into a clean river or lake. That’s what summer’s supposed to be.
