The Northwest Summer Day To Avoid – If You’re Getting Married

July 19, 2011 by Bruce Sussman 2 Comments

Have you ever started hunting for something specific around the house–only to find something unexpected, that’s really cool?

Well, that happened to me when I was digging through the records on rainy & cool July days.

I discovered that if you’re getting married in Portland or Salem during the summertime–do not plan an outdoor wedding on July 12th!

Cool days happen from time to time in July. Wet days happen time to time in July–even though it’s our driest month of the year. But the odds of the same day each year being cool & wet is super low.

And that’s where the weird trend for July 12th comes in: 4 of the last 6 years, that day has been either the coolest day of July or the wettest day of July. Sometimes both. That’s 67% of the time for six years running.

Is it because the mother ship is landing? Or, perhaps the government is controlling the weather, after all? Hmmm.

Whatever the reason–it’s a strange trend that no other days in July are showing. So if you’re getting married next July–don’t do it on the 12th.

At least not without getting a good deal on tents.

The funny thing about July 12th is it used to be one of the only days for over 100 straight years that Salem never had measurable rain fall. A good friend of mine was married on this day back in 2002 and picked it because it never rained on July 12th. I believe this streak was broken back in 2006.

Hi Bruce : Talking about days when it never rains. The day I used to say it never rained here in Vancouver BC (or no measurable rain) was on September 12th. For over 30 years it was almost always dry on the date-until last year when we had our wettest day of the month (September) on the 12th.
