Space Shuttle Discovery – Last Picture In Space

March 9, 2011 by Bruce Sussman Leave a Comment

Here it is: one last image of Space Shuttle Discovery after it undocked from the International Space station on March 7, 2011. This is a NASA image.

The Shuttle Discovery did one last fly around the space station (which is on the right here) so an astronaut could snap this shot. Wow.

Incredible Facts From NASA About Space Shuttle Discovery

  • This was the spaceship’s 39th and final flight
  • It spent a total of 365 days in space
  • It orbited the earth 5,830 times
  • During each re-entry, the shuttles shell hit 3,000 degrees
  • It traveled 148,221,675 miles

So how far did it go between oil changes? I’m guessing more than five thousand miles!

All of the retired shuttles will go to museums around the country.

I heard the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum in McMinnville  was trying for one. That would be so cool.
