Portland Hot Weather Trend Increasing Right Into Summer 2015

June 21, 2015 by Bruce Sussman 8 Comments

record-summer-temperatures-portlandI’m guessing it could be a record year for businesses along the Oregon Coast.

Because if you’re planning on escaping hot weather anytime in the next few months then it could be your only choice within a reasonable drive.

The talk around the I-5 Corridor from Kelso to Vancouver to Salem is that this is going to be a ‘long, hot, summer’ and it appears this speculation is right on the money. Here is the proof.

Portland’s Hot Weather Increasing – Record June Ahead

It was an exceptional spring around the Willamette Valley for enjoying the incredible scenery that makes Oregon and Washington special. But for many, it’s gotten to hot, too fast. Here is the trend we’re working with:

  • April 2015 – Portland average temperature  +.5 degrees (so, virtually average despite very warm finish)
  • May 2015 – Portland average temperature   +2.8 degrees (considerably above average)
  • June 2015 – Portland average temperature  +5.2 degrees so far — on track for new record hot June – beating out 1992

Also, it looks like we’re on track for the hottest ‘high temperatures’ on record for June. Right now Portland’s average high this month is 80.2 degrees.

Here’s A Crazy Portland Hot Weather Stat For You To Share With Your Friends

By the end of June, Portland will have had more than 25 days this year at or above 80 degrees. This is more than double the average!

One final thought: I’ve been asked over the years what is the worst kind of spring weather when it comes to creating a dangerous wildfire season west of the Cascades.

I finally got the answer to that question at a talk a couple of years ago from a NOAA Fire Weather Forecaster, based in Portland.

He said the worst thing that can happen is an unusually hot and dry June. He emphasized that June really is the month that tips the scales one way or another. I guess we know which way the scale is tipped this year…

Because of this hot summer, does that mean we wont have a cold wet or snowy winter. For us foul weather people(like me) is hoping for a cold winter maybe with snow. What can you tell me?

      Hi Connie:

I have often seen one extreme…leads to another. So if this is a record hot summer–get set–we could have some crazy winter cold and snow ahead for winter 2015-2016.

We’ll see how it goes. Thanks for your question!

I know it is a reality, but really not looking forward to this Summer. The Fires scare me the most. Just have to think , cool thoughts. I guess.

Yes, the fires really are a wildcard each year. Hopefully your cool thoughts will help!

      Thanks,

The shade, cooling fans, ac, water to be in and/or drink or make ice cubes of, my essentials for the next week or so. Good time to do a lot of book reading too! Seriously, hope next summer has record lows!

      Caroline:

We’ve certainly had ‘cool’ summers in the past, as you know. At least some cool nights are nice. We’ll hope for a ‘later in the summer’ cool down.

      Thanks for your note.

Hi Bruce: Intresting to see you compare this June to June 1992. That also was my previous warmest, but this one in 2015 will beat it. It should also be drier than June 2009.

      Hi Roland:

Thanks for the notes on your 1992. Now let’s see how hot we both get this weekend — and again closer to the 4th of July.

I hope you are doing great!

      Bruce
