June 2015 Weather: One To Tell The Grandkids About

July 2, 2015 by Bruce Sussman 2 Comments

oregon-record-heatRecord heat replaced our typically coolish and showery June weather in 2015.

Lots of records fell — so many that I think you’ll be able to tell your grandkids, “I remember there was a June where the heat never stopped. Kids played outside in the sun every single day!”

Of course, Oregon and Washington kids might not believe your story if it’s a rainy June in the future. So bookmark this page as proof!

Record Breaking June Heat: Oregon & Washington

I’m going to include links and images to some other cities below–but I’ll use Portland as the example here. I think you’ll get the idea of just how extreme June 2015 really was in the northwest.

–Portland, Oregon – all time hottest June temperature (highs/lows combined) 70.3 degrees – way ahead of the second warmest June on record with an average temperature of 67.4 degrees

–Portland, Oregon – all time hottest June when it comes to our high temperatures – our average high this month was 82.6 degrees. The month-long average high for June, based on the last 30 years, is just 73.5 degrees. So a major difference.

–Portland, Oregon – the most June days, ever, with highs 80 degrees and warmer. (27 days in 2015 / previous record 16 days-1987).

–Portland, Oregon – most June days, ever, with highs 90 degrees and warmer. (9 days in 2015 / previous record 6 days – 2003).

–Portland, Oregon – warmest low temperature ever recorded on a June day. June 27 we had a low of 71 degrees!

Portland also had a dry June 2015–I mean, we can’t have a bunch of rain storms and record heat all month, too, right? Portland had 27 consecutive days with a trace of rain or less–the longest June dry streak ever recorded. (Previous: 23 days-1985).

The rose city also had the 6th driest June on record with just .40″ of rain.

A few other notes: Hillsboro, McMinnville, Salem and Eugene also had their hottest June on record during 2015. The National Weather Service in Portland put together a great summary of all these records you might want to save.

And if you want to read about Seattle’s Record June Heat, Meteorologist Scott Sistek at KOMO-TV does an awesome job, as always, with this post: June Doesn’t Just Break, But Destroys Several Seattle Temperature Records.

Here are some other incredible things I saw on twitter–including some of Eastern Washington’s hottest June days, ever:

Several people have asked me, “When will this end?” Well, the heat may not be as extreme next week, but overall, there’s no end to above average temperatures in view for the I-5 Corridor.

The good news?

Lots of veggies — tons of them — from our backyard gardens this year!

Very Impressive data! Recently, I wrote to another blog site the words: ‘Fantastic June- but I don’t want a repeat!” All along the west coast records were smashed. In my locality, it was 6.6F warmer than normal for June. Not only that, but it was my 14th warmest month since I recorded daily observations in 1975. My previous warmest June ranked at 53rd.
