And about to unload right near the end of the first half during the Timbers versus Vancouver match on Saturday night May 26, 2012.
@jakellyspecial tweeted this incredible shot of lightning over Jeld-Wen field between halves. The lightning delayed the start of the second half for a bit. We had 60 metro area lightning strikes in just over an hour.
And Midwest-type-rain just dumped down. The KOIN Local 6 weather station at Jeld-Wen Field (yes, it’s right there) picked up .38″ in 20 minutes. Wow.
And in the match between weather and the Timbers–the weather won for a few minutes anyway! Thanks to @christian_saint for this shot.
The rain at Portland Airport totaled 1.02″ in an hour–from 6:53-7:53pm. The one hour record? 1.03″! We were close.
There was only one really powerful thunderstorm in the northwest on Saturday. And what are the chances of it nailing the Portland-Vancouver metro area for the second night in a row?
Low. Very low. We average just five thunderstorms a year! So I guess it’s 2 down…and three to go.
Hopefully the next one doesn’t hit during a Timber’s game. Or Rose Festival, for that matter.
Perhaps this is just what the Whitecaps needed to generate some excitement for their season! 馃檪 Seriously though, that must have been quite the downpour: I saw a hailshower over my house last month that dropped about 0.30 inches in 20 minutes, so the one yesterday at the stadium had mine beat!
Roland–that sounds like a crazy hail shower at your place! And yes, the video we had on the news last night was just torrential downpour like a scene from Kansas!
