Pineapple Express Makes 2012 One Of Wettest Years In Portland History

December 5, 2012 by Bruce Sussman 1 Comment

I always know it’s a wet day in the Portland-Vancouver area when “Lake Sussman” appears.

That is, a giant mud puddle in the lower right side of our yard.

As you see here, Portland had over an inch of rain on Tuesday December 4, 2012–but this time of year, that’s not even close to a record. The rainiest place our PinPoint Weather team tracked in the Portland metro area was 1.31″ in Lake Oswego. I always knew you guys in LO had more of everything! (If you’re from outside the area, Lake Oswego is a very classy and upscale Portland suburb…)

The wettest places on December 4th? The ski resorts on Mt. Hood. Timberline Lodge had just over 4.50″ of rain. Mt. Hood Meadows had more than 3.50″ and Ski Bowl had more than 2.50″.

Portland’s Very Rainy Fall Weather – And Portland’s Rainy Spring Weather Send 2012 Into Record Books

We’ve had just two positions on the northwest ‘rain switch’ during 2012. “On” for a super soggy spring and off the charts wet fall. And “Off” for a record breaking dry summer in 2012. But with more time in the “On” position–this is the 8th wettest year on record at Portland Airport, where long term records dating back to 1940 are kept. Thanks to our weather intern, Jeff, for whipping up this graphic!

Looks like you’re going to beat us here in total rainfall for the year. For the first 11 months of 2012, I’m at 90% of normal. August-September was dry with 0.9% (normal is 8.2%) of 2012, but I think your autumn rains are heavier than here in Vancouver,BC. I didn’t get a single day over an inch for the whole month of November.
