Record Breaking Start To Northwest Rainy Season

October 12, 2012 by Bruce Sussman 3 Comments

Is this crazy or what?

I mean–we had .25″ of rain in 3 months and next thing you know it’s rainy cats and dogs and doesn’t stop.

In the graphic you can see that Portland, Vancouver and Salem all smashed rainfall records for October 12th.

And there are two more amazing things, to me, anyway:

  1. Portland went from NO rain for the month as of October 11…to 134% of average for the month by the end of the day on October 12, 2012.
  2. The last time Portland had a day with rain greater than 1.11″? I kept looking back and back and back through our records this year. All the way back to January to find a day wetter than October 12th. Now that’s a rare way to start the rainy season!

Here’s the breakdown on that part of the story:

I just cannot believe the sudden change–and I’ve been doing this a long time around here!

I hope you and yours have a great rainy season. I’m sure your lawn already is…

Hey, Bruce: Where are you? Haven’t seen a new blog all this week. Anyway, it’s cooled off here today (Oct.20th) Snow seen up on the ski hills, and some mixed hail/rain showers this morning.

Roland–sorry to vanish into thin air. We were on a cruise and I had zero internet minutes because they’re like 40cents a minute. But I’m back. Hope you’re doing well!

Well Bruce, although the concentration of rain caused some major damage because of fallen trees, it’s cool that we’re currently having a dry spell. Looking at the extended forecast, if we weren’t so close to the end of the month, another record might have been broken – the # of consecutive October days without rain!
