An Interview With KOIN Local 6 Weekend Weather Anchor Sally Showman

July 15, 2011 by Bruce Sussman 12 Comments

Fifteen years ago — I was walking in Sally Showman’s footsteps.

I moved from a Spokane news station to a Portland news station. Sally just did that.

I was a weekend weather anchor and weekday reporter. Sally is doing that.

And I was close to becoming a certified meteorologist. Sally is on her way to doing that.

But who is Sally, anyway? For my ongoing series of Friday interviews I introduce you to the new Weekend Weather Anchor on KOIN Local 6, Sally Showman.

#1 I heard this rumor that you actually like rain. Is this really true? It is!  I love it.  It reminds me of home.  I grew up in Seattle but moved away years ago so it’s nice to be back in a place where I can cozy up with a hot latte, read a book and listen to the rain on the windows.

#2 What’s one of the first ‘cool things’ you noticed about Portland when you rolled into town? How everyone seems to have a dog!  I’m a huge dog person and it is so cool to see everyone out walking their dogs. Also, how everyone rides a bike!  Holy cow, I’ve never seen so many bikers in my life. That reminds me…I need to buy myself one!

#3 Tell us about some of the craziest weather you’ve had to forecast–or make it through–during your career. I’ve survived a lot, Bruce!  I started my weather career filling in for our main weather anchors in Spokane and it seemed every time I was filling in…mayhem ensued!  Seriously. My third time doing weather one of the biggest snow storms in Spokane’s history hit town.  I stood at the weather wall for about ten hours that day.  That’s where my nickname “Bad Omen Showman”  comes from…about six months later a rare tornado warning was issued just north of town.  Hopefully that streak will stop here in Portland.

#4 When you’re not working, what do you love to do? I love doing anything outside! Running, hiking, skiing.  Right now I’m training for the Portland Marathon.  God willing I’ll be ready by October!  Yikes.

#5 If people want to reach and/or follow you, how can they do it? I love talking with our viewers!  You can email me sshowman@koin.com or find me on facebook  or follow me on twitter.

You can also read her bio over on koinlocal6.com.

Sally has a great attitude and I’m really excited to have her as part of the PinPoint Weather Team. Be sure to check out her forecasts on the weekends…and Sally, welcome aboard!

She is doing a good job. I can tell that she will fit in with the folks there. One question that nags at me, where are you? Your still my favorite meteorologist here in Portland.

We have enjoyed Sally’s bright smile and professional delivery since she arrived at KOIN. Being “seniors” (from a different era) we appreciate Sally’s tasteful appearance, too.
What a nice addition to the Portland TV scene.

No problem–I caught that and edited it. I’m already having senior moments myself…

The weather is not the same without Bruce. He’s the best!! How could you let him go??? I would rather see Sally in Bruce’s spot than the new person. I like watching the news on KOIN, but I change the channel to watch the weather. I will also follow Bruce to whatever local station hires him. Bruce is a great person. I miss his smiling face.

I miss Sally. Her amazing Smile made me happy. She was an asset, a joy, no matter the weather. Now when I tune in, if I don’t see Sally, I don’t really concentrate on what Claire ( bless her heart) is saying. I just wonder ‘ where’s our happy smiling girl, Sally. Is she coming back? If not, why. It’s a real loss not having her. I wish her luck and good fortune whatever she’s doing.
