90 Degree Heat Ahead – I Heard It On The Playground

May 11, 2012 by Bruce Sussman Leave a Comment

It’s amazing how fast the word spreads when Portland’s about to hit 90 degrees.

On Thursday I picked up our boys from school and we stopped at the school’s playground so they could play outside for a few minutes.

My oldest son said, “It’s kind of cold in the shade.” He was right because it was only in the fifties. And I said, “Don’t worry, it’ll feel like summer very soon.”

That’s when I was ‘notified’ of the forecast. “I know, Dad,” he said. “It’s going to be 90 on Monday!” I said, “Wait, where did you hear that?” And he said, “Ella’s mom told me! It’s going to be 90 on Monday.” And after telling the weatherman the forecast, he ran off to play on the sunny part of the playground! Sure enough, I went to work that afternoon and put 90 degrees on my Monday forecast.

Like I said, I heard it on the playground!

Portland’s Hottest Weather In Eight Months

Here are some of the facts about our weather as we threaten to hit 90 degrees on either Sunday May 13 (Mother’s Day!), Monday May 14 or both. Highs both days will likely be in the 87-91 degree range. That’s summer sizzle, right here in spring!

  • The only record at risk for Portland is on Monday – record high is 86
  • The last 90 degree day we had in Portland was in late September – 8 months ago
  • This will be our hottest stretch of weather since September 2011
  • The last two years we didn’t even hit 80 during the month of May!

Have a great weekend–and stay cool!
