I’ve heard from quite a few blog readers this weekend–asking if I am back on the Portland airwaves, and if so, for how long.
Well, I am back on the air, doing vacation coverage, through March 18th on the KATU Channel 2 morning news.
I’m just filling in but it is so great to share the anchor desk for a few days with Natali Marmion and work with Meteorologist Rhonda Shelby and traffic guru Michael Convery.Â
The local TV news circles are small and I’ve been friends with Natali, Rhonda and Michael for a long time. And what is cooler than getting a chance to actually work with your friends, right?
On Friday the 13th of March, Michael Convery and I thought about walking under a random ladder that we found in our studio…
Neither one of us is superstitious but we also decided NOT to go under the thing. You know, just in case.
And we celebrated National Girl Scouts Day with some special guests who got up hours earlier than usual to come talk with us!
They even left us some samples of Thin Mints (yes!) and those other types of cookies. Wait, are there other flavors??
I can tell you we are having fun in the mornings.
And if you did know I was back on air, then you might have left one of the nice posts on various Facebook pages or perhaps tweeted to welcome me back. If so, thank you. I have read each comment!
To see how the news anchoring goes for the next few days check out the KATU morning news from 4:30-7am during the first half of the week.Â
Just an FYI: after Journalism School I started reporting and anchoring weekend news in Yakima and then Spokane before going back to meteorology school and coming to Portland. So it is really fun to be on the news desk again.
And all of your support helps make it that way…

Good to see your new blog as well. I thought you had gone from that for good!
Thanks for your update. I’ll be tuning into KATU to watch you. You’ve been missed!
Thanks, Kathy, I appreciate it!
Thank’s for the head-up. I don’t normally watch Channel 2, but sure have enjoyed seeing you on air again.
Carole–thank you for checking us out!
This is terrific news! Love seeing you and all the weather news! Thank you KATU!
I am so glad to know I can tune and watch you, even for a short time. I’ll be watching KATU in the morning, at least for the next few days!
Great to see you again. We want you back in Portland. We have missed your uplifting spirit and great forecasting.
Thank you, Karen!
It is so great to see you on air again Bruce! I was (am) so mad at KOIN for how they treated you. The people that own KOIN are a bunch of total idiots! Getting rid on one of the most qualified/professional/ and personable weather anchors is just beyond belief. Sorry KOIN, but I very rarely watch you anymore because of the way you treat your employees.
So wonderful that you are on KATU for the week and hopefully it will become permanent.
Come on KATU, give this guy a full time job!
From a native Oregonian and Portlander.
Thomas: thank you so much for your nice post. I’ve had a great time this week on KATU! Super friendly crew at the station.
Take care,
Bruce

Bruce, You are so missed by many and me. I have been looking for you on other channels and finally spotted you on Katu. I pray that you will get a permanent position soon. I hope Kelley Day will be back on the air again soon.

So great to see you again, Bruce. You remain missed and admired by many. Your weather site is great too. But we need more of your cheerful on-air presence. Hope things are going well for you.

I’ve been in Bruce Sussman withdrawal. You’re my favorite weatherman. Was thrilled to see the ad about Bruce back on the air. You’re so up-beat. I hope something permanent comes of it! Welcome back, Bruce. Nice to see your smiling face on Portland TV again!
Thanks, Virgie, you are too kind!
I appreciate you watching & writing,
Bruce
It’s been good seeing you. Turned the TV on and you are gone. It’s a bummer.
Hope all is well and maybe your good showing will make a permanent return.
Bruce:
We sent a note to the General Manager and Customer Service at KATU on Monday. It was wonderful to find you on the morning news for your short stint. Traffic and weather is enough during the very early hours; however, we stayed tuned for the entire broadcast each day you reported….and enjoyed it thoroughly! We noted the professionalism we have always appreciated about you. Having crossed paths with you in your public view one time and a second time with your family, you stopped to greet us with a kind smile and chat about the weather. You made our day! We join the other viewers in our desire to see you back on the air permanently. Thank you!
Kind regards,
Johanna Cazanas

Hey Bruce, really great to see your smiling face doing the weather news on K2!
My husband and I were really bummed out when you were no longer giving us the weather updates.
One more good reason to wake up to Channel 2’s lineup.
Happened to tune in to KATU tonight and was pleased to see you on the air…how many days a week and at what times are you on?
Happy to see your professionalism On the Air once more.
We have missed you. Switching over to katu. Because of Bruce….
