Portland Winter Weather Forecast 2010-2011 and the Effects of La Nina

November 5, 2010 by Bruce Sussman 2 Comments

I love when I get emails like the one from a woman a few years ago. “I’m getting married on July 23rd and I’m wondering if you have any idea what the weather will be like. I know this is still two months away, but would you have any idea?” I wrote her back and told here that although I could not predict what would happen on that particular day (especially at 2 o’clock). But I did tell her that statistically, she was getting married during one of our driest weeks of the year. As close to a guarantee as you can get.

When it comes to a winter forecast, we’re kind of in the same boat. I can’t tell you which days it’s going to snow. But I can look at reasons to focus on certain trends or themes for the coming winter of 2010-2011. And that’s what I do in the video below, focusing on our La Nina winter. What is La Nina, anyway, and what does it mean for us? Watch the video and I explain both.

Great video – very well done! And great analogy on the idea of forecasting a whole winter’s weather. Thanks!
