Sunday Night Total Lunar Eclipse – When and Where To Look

September 27, 2015 by Bruce Sussman 4 Comments

Total-Lunar-Eclipse-what-time

I am really excited about tonight. Grab the kids, the dog or whomever you can for an early evening show up above!

Keep an eye on the eastern sky right about     7 o’clock tonight.

The moon will be rising in the east and part of it will already look ‘dim’ or ‘strange’ as it comes up…because the ellipse has already started as it rises about Portland, Vancouver and Seattle.

The moon will appear completely dimmed or dark during totality, which runs from 7:11pm to 8:23pm — that is a lot of time to catch this!

Expect to see red, gray, orange or some other eerie glow while moon is in the earth’s shadow. This is because sunlight is still passing around the very edges of the earth’s atmosphere so muted colors from all the earth’s current sunsets and sunrises are being cast onto the moon during totality!

This is the last total Lunar eclipse until 2018.

Also, clarification on the Super Moon: it is the Full Moon each year when the moon is closest to earth–this is that moon. It is nearly 30,000 miles closer to earth than it averages for the year. Because it is closer, it appears up to 14% bigger and some say also brighter. It is an illusion, of course.

And, this is also the Harvest Moon–the Full Moon closest to the autumnal equinox. So this is total lunar eclipse of the Harvest Moon and the Super Moon. Crazy!

I hope this helps you know when and where to look for the total lunar eclipse on September 27, 2015.
