Live Blog From Cannon Beach, Oregon

Ever feel like you travel to far flung places but miss gems nearby in the process?

That’s the way I feel about Cannon Beach just a few miles south of Seaside. I took this shot of people taking a snooze with Haystack Rock in the background. Ahhh, this place is relaxing.

I’m writing this on my iPhone – sitting on the beach. The kids are making a sand fort and my wife’s reading her Kindle. In three minutes the devices go off and we’re going on a family hike toward Haystack Rock where we tide-pooled earlier this morning.

So, with my time limit in mind, here are three quick things about our brief vacation to Cannon Beach, Oregon.

#1: I got tired of ‘only’ seeing the place through our KOIN Local 6 camera on top of the Tolovana Inn! It was time to actually see the views & the resort for myself. I can’t even tell you how great it was to sit on our balcony (with chairs that were actually comfortable!) and watch the waves crash in. And the walk to the beach? About 12 steps down. That’s it! Like most coastal properties, the resort has a rich history. But our room and everything we saw was updated and modern. That includes the large pool & hot tub. And free WiFi in the rooms. In my opinion the resort was as awesome as the views. And there’s some more good news if you wouldn’t visit the coast without eating at Mo’s. The Tolovana Inn is right next door. Love that!

#2: There are a ton of places to eat in Cannon Beach. And most have decks or tables outside in the sun. My favorite place is the Lumberyard Rotisserie & Grill on 3rd on the north end of town. The s’mores dessert was the best! Again, this is just one of many great looking and tasting places we ate.

#3: If you have or just happen to love dogs–Cannon Beach is the place to visit! We saw all kinds of breeds and the kids loved it. The smallest was a Weiner Dog and the largest was a St. Bernard. At times over the weekend it seemed like humans barely outnumbered the dogs. Sunset Magazine ranks Cannon Beach as its top destination out west for dog families!

My wife and I are already talking about making this an annual trip. Our oldest son wrote a song called, “Haystack Rock, I love you-ou.” Sounds like a success to me!

Now…time for the pre-sunset hike toward Haystack Rock. See ya!

      Kenny–

Now you can tell everyone you’re not crazy! I remember seeing you guys at the sunniest table in Cannon Beach with no working blinds. But hey, it was nice to have sun for once on a beach trip! We did have fun, hope you did too.

      Thanks for the post.
