What Happened To KOIN Local 6 Meteorologist Bruce Sussman?

June 10, 2011 by Bruce Sussman 9 Comments

An entire week has gone by.

With only a handful of tweets.

Just four posts on Facebook.

And only one new story here on the brucesussman.com weather blog.

What happened to me?

I was busier than I have been in years–and you can blame it on my day job!

New Look, New Newscast For KOIN Local 6

For starters, we launched our 4pm newscast this last week (it runs from 4pm-5pm) and that means an extra hour of on the air work for Jeff Gianola, Kelley Day and myself. I don’t mind, though, because it’s a sign that things are going so well here at KOIN Local 6 that we could add an extra hour of news. Pretty cool.

The biggest thing, though, was our new ‘look’ including brand-spankin-new weather graphics! I’m most excited about two things: first is the way we did the 7day forecast. It was made with you in mind.

By stacking the last two days of Portland’s 7day forecast, we saved space.  That allowed us to make each box, weather icon and all the numbers 16.67% bigger.Hey, that’s new and improved…especially if you watch the news while running around the house and doing stuff  just waiting to see the latest 7day forecast. This way it should be easier for you to scan the forecast from across the room or down the hall and get the weather info you want to get.

And when I’m not on TV, I’m making graphics that match this new look. Our library of hundreds of graphics from the ‘old look’ is now largely headed for the recycle bin. Old Rose Festival graphic? Nope…make a new one. Old weekend forecast for the coast? Nope…make a new one. You get the idea.

The second most exciting thing is how our PinPoint Weather Net now looks (it’s powered by WeatherBug). We used to have a bunch of crazy boxes covering up parts of these awesome HD Cameras & weather stations. Now the boxes are gone and the weather numbers are huge to make everything easier to read at a glance. We’re now up to 107 local, LIVE PinPoint Weather Stations–and we’re adding two more HD Cameras in the next month. That’s so fun. And helpful. Because no one else in town has anything like it. I can brag a little on my own blog, right? Hopefully…

So, that’s the story of the KOIN Local 6 Meteorologist who suddenly vanished from his favorite online hangouts–Twitter, Facebook and brucesussman.com.

Have you seen the new graphics? Please let me know what you think and post things you like or suggestions you have for improving this new look.

Because you’re the reason I get to keep doing the weather on KOIN Local 6. Thank you for keeping me employed!

I love the post Bruce. Great sense of humor over your own work. The new graphics look good so far, I’ll have to see how they look live on air.

I was vacationing at the coast (Yachats) for a week and when I got home…WOW!! What a great new look for KOIN. And the weather graphics are wonderful. Please remember to include eastern Oregon (Hermiston / Pendleton area) in your reports. KOIN is the only news I watch.

(You might remember me…I visited the studio as Jeff’s guest in December ’09)
